Corporations and Unions

The modern limited liability corporation is a great producer of wealth and has enabled this nation and its people to enjoy a high standard of living.  It does not have jobs as its priority indeed jobs are an expense and corporations try to minimise the jobs needed to produce their products.  We see this today that corporations are cutting back to save money and are also waiting for clarity in the political process.  But as corporations prosper they create more jobs.

Corporations are liable to their board of directors and their stockholders.  Employees have no voice until unions represented them.  We pride ourselves on having a democratic government but most of us are in a workplace dictatorship where if you do not have a union to represent you, you can be tossed out the door in short order.  It is crushing to have your supervisor walk into your workspace and tell you to pick up all your stuff and leave now.  This is especially hard on professional employees like engineers and other technical people that have dedicated their lives to their jobs.  A lifetime of work can be snuffed out.

Jim has been a union member of SPEEA ( Seattle Professional Employees Association) while working at Boeing.

In this current environment many workers have had to seek lower level employment.  It is surprising how many executives and other high paid persons are driving long haul trucks today.  In addition to the unemployment index, we have the under employment index which is closer to 14-17%.

  1. I understand Mr. Postma is a union man but he didn’t talk about the elephant in the room. Union leaders have elected and running candidates in their back pocket through donations and union member intimidation, I am not saying Mr. Postma falls in this group. I am not taking about the private sector unionization ether; I am talking about unionization of the government. Because the candidates and elected office holders take donation and fear being ousted, they allow unreasonable agreements in the hiring process, wages and benefits. Take the Veterans Administration or any other department, people are hired or appointed to run these organization without accountability. They are paid five times the average worker give many perks and life time employment, can the same be said about your job. When department administrators manipulate, lie, embezzle, or cheat, they are quickly retired with 100% retirement, given severance pay, or just moved to another location. There is no need for unions in government operations; our laws have changed enough to protect these employees. What the people need is the ability to fire, remove, prosecute, or take pensions and benefits. Just think about the Veterans that died while waiting in a factious waiting list and the two administrators responsible are moved to another location at the same pay. You can thank JFK, Go unions.
